Volunteer Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in MHI international Mission. We depend on the generosity of people like you to assist the people in need of help, especially those whose lives would be worthless without your prompt intervention, treatment, and rehabilitation. Below are some of the volunteer opportunities offered by MHI International
Biomedical equipment technicians (BioMeds)
Sending medical equipment to developing nations without training to manage and maintain the equipment is counterproductive. Proper Installation includes configuration the equipment so it is compatible with the local electrical current or private generation of electricity is necessary. Instructions are needed on conservation of electricity and proper use and maintenance of the equipment.   Most importantly, BMeds train and/or provide capacity-building programs to capable locals on how to service, maintain and if possible repair vital medical equipment such as an EKG., heart monitor, medical imaging equipment,  electric beds, analog and digital electronics and other medical apparatuses.
Nurses Formulates training programs that address the needs of the region. Training plans are implemented to help trainees  in spite of a difficult environment, showing them how to to deal with  personal problems that might be obstacles to understanding and processing information.  Training with charts is organized for the following topics: (i)   Management of Patient Health/Illness Status, Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability Procedures, Skin and Wound Care, Head, Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Procedures, Chest and Abdomen, Gynecologic, Genital/urinary, and Rectal Procedures, Extremity Procedures.  Conduct and record evaluation and assessment of the trainees, write and submit to Clinical/Medical Director general evidence-based report of the training and participate in practicum, follow-up exercises of trainees.
Mental Health professionals: These volunteers include psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, psychiatric nurse, mental health counselor, social worker (under mental health), family therapist, and public health administrator (background in mental health). Train lay persons to deal with the following kinds of trauma and counseling issues: outbreak of violence;  peaceful co-existence;  diffuse and mitigate conflict; dealing with issues such as protein energy malnutrition, malaria and other local diseases; grief and stress management; inability to meet family responsibilities; parenting skills; gender based violence; arrangements for food and shelter for the vulnerable, especially children , pregnant women and elderly people;  unexpected death, survivors of victims of violent crime; screening and evaluation of survivors of conflicts, accidents, and other tragic incidents; guiding people toward better sustainability in life.
Cross-Cutting Theme (CCT) professionals: These are professionals that are not directly related to mental health, but are necessary in addressing population, topic, activity, intervention and program that do not apply directly to mental health, but are basically essential to achieving successful and sustainable results. This type of interdisciplinary coalition is needed especially in psychosocial rehabilitation programs, where water, food, education, nutrition, medical care, and recreation may be needed as a part of treatment plan to reduce stress, anxiety, depression, impulsive and aggressive behavior, etc. In this case any related professionals can be requested to join the mission. These volunteers include psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, psychiatric nurse, mental health counselor, social worker (under mental health), family therapist, and public health administrator (background in mental health).
Administrative positions: For those who have administrative skills and experiences and want to volunteer at any point during the year, MHI International will need their services. Some volunteers in this category will work closely with mental health professionals as support staff or as Field Coordinator or Office Administrator or Safety and Security Officers in mission countries.
Domestic volunteer positions: These are for part time or full time opportunities to volunteer at MHI’s offices in Miami Florida, Denver Colorado, and other administrative needs that are necessary to carry out MHI's missions. They will be assisting in various administrative tasks as needed.
Graduate Internship Program: Designed for mental health students under training, whose universities have programs for them to receive classroom or clinical credits for working with international NGOs. Internships are accepted on need-basis and on the availability of qualified supervisors and clinical environment that supports clinical supervised programs. If selected, volunteers may receive compensation from MHI International. Compensation can be material reward or reimbursement or cash or gift certificate in appreciation for a service or help rendered directly or indirectly on behalf of MHI International. The monitory amount and value of the compensation may be fixed, negotiated, or discretionary.

The following must be noted:

In some cases, volunteers may voluntarily pay some part of their traveling expenses unless MHI International has secured enough funding for that cost.

In most cases, volunteers are reimbursed for their immunization (which is compulsory for all volunteers on overseas mission).
In some cases, volunteers would receive a per diem for their room and board.

Training/Orientation
:
All volunteers (foreign and local) must receive orientation relating to the nature of their jobs, social and cultural issues, living accommodation, and security before engaging in field work. There should be daily briefing and debriefing of active volunteers, especially in areas where security is volatile.

Other information will be provided as your application process progresses. If you are still interested to volunteer, please move to the nex level.
